My oldest daughter wrote me yesterday to tell me she had lost two
"Christian" friends on Facebook in a day, allegedly for
her being too
"judgmental." One friend disassociated herself from her because she
doesn't support abortion. The other broke ties with her because she
refuses to endorse same-sex marriage. Isn't it interesting today how
many people who call themselves "Christian" hold political viewpoints in
direct conflict with the God they claim to be following? To be sure, the
bible couldn't be any more clear than it is concerning God's position on
these two issues. Let's have a look.
The parameters of marriage are set forth in the book of Genesis. In the
following verses of Scripture we see the creation of Eve, immediately
after which God defines the ingredients of marriage clearly. No place in
Scripture is this recipe ever deviated from to allow for same-sex
marriage.
Genesis 2:22-24:
And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and
brought her unto the man.
And Adam said, This [is] now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh:
she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave
unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
One man + one woman = marriage. Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. It's
pretty simple, isn't it? Any sexual union outside the confines of
marriage as defined in Scripture is adultery. We are commanded not to
commit adultery in the Ten Commandments so I'll leave it at that, but
not because I couldn't whip out any number of Scriptures, both from the
New and Old Testaments, that tell us same-sex relationships are sinful.
Where abortion is concerned, the killing (yes killing) of an unborn
child via abortion is, once again, a violation of God's Law as presented
to us in the Ten Commandments. That whole "thou shalt not kill" thing?
God meant it and Scripture tells us a fetus is a human being.
Psalm 139:14-16:
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully [and] wonderfully made:
marvelous [are] thy works; and [that] my soul knoweth right well.
My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, [and]
curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being imperfect; and in thy book
all [my members] were written, [which] in continuance were fashioned,
when [as yet there was] none of them.
God's Creation is at work in the formation, growth and birth of every
child. While in the womb, even before any of a child's members are
formed, God takes account of them then weaves them together from the
point of conception until birth. Interrupting that process via abortion,
as such, is a sin. It isn't very hard to figure out, is it?
So, why do we see "Christians" grilling Christians and disassociating
themselves from them for holding positions in keeping with God's clear
teachings on a host of fronts? There are several reasons. Let's look at
a few.
Many people today refer to themselves as Christians for little reason
other than family tradition. Others are guilty of ignoring the teachings
of Scripture in favor of political correctness in order to feel more
accepted in a world they shouldn't particularly feel the need to be
accepted by. Others attend church regularly, read a Christian commentary
here or there or hear a sermon once and a while, but don't know what the
bible actually says --- other than every sinner's favorite
misinterpreted Scripture, Matthew 7:1, which says, "Judge not, that ye
be not judged."
Contrary to popular opinion, Matthew 7:1 isn't a directive indicating we
are to be position-less on spiritual matters. Far from it! Christians are
to be obedient to God's Word to the very best of their ability, no small
task because of the weaknesses of human flesh, but as obedient as we
possibly can be and that very clearly requires us to judge right from
wrong in accordance with His Word. But will judging right from wrong
make Christians perfect people? No way. Not at all!
Make no mistake about it, we are all sinners. Beginning with me, there
isn't a single person who will read this commentary who has examined
God's Word with any sincerity of purpose and walked away from it feeling
blameless where sin is concerned. You sin, I sin, we all sin and that's
that. Period. But let me be clear about one thing. None of us should be
okay with the fact we or anyone else sins against God's will. Nor should
we call ourselves Christians if we are on God's side on one issue and
Satan's on the other!
If you're calling yourself a Christian, and
believe yourself to be one, but
you're defriending people on Facebook (or anyplace else) for no reason
other than they're taking a position in agreement with Almighty God,
it's time for you to ask yourself a few questions.
If you're not in agreement with God concerning what He tells us is sin,
are you any different from those who don't call themselves Christians?
If there is nothing in your life that distinguishes you from the
ungodly, are you sure you're a Christian?
Jesus Christ said, as recorded in John 15:18-19:
"If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before [it hated] you.
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye
are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore
the world hateth you."
Being a bible-believing Christian isn't going to win you a lot of
friends in this world. Most Christians who've attempted to live lives in
keeping with God's Word have lost friends. The above Scripture tells us
why this is true so it should come as no surprise when it happens, but
what throws many Christians for a loop these days is when they find
themselves drawing the ire of people they have believed to be brothers
and sisters in Christ. That isn't supposed to happen and shouldn't be
happening. Christians aren't to conform to the world, Christians are to
encourage the world to conform to the will of God! Or have we forgotten
that?
1st John 2:15-17:
Love not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any
man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of
the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the
world.
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the
will of God abideth for ever.
If you're someone who is currently calling yourself a Christian yet
behaving in such a manner as to please the powers and principalities
working in our world today to undermine God's will, it's time for a
reality check. Whose side are you really on? Choose wisely and conduct
yourself accordingly to the very best of your ability because the God
you profess to be a follower of
is watching.
